LEVEL 6/7- High SCHOOL- Ages 14-18
Level 6/7 Flat Ballet: One hour class where students will focus on building the strength, flexibility and control needed to execute Ballet & Contemporary technique. The dancer is taught to interpret his or her movement with feeling, emotion, and style. Ballet technique taught at Sherri's Dance Center is a combination of Italian Cecchetti and Russian Vaganova technique. Emphasis on understanding correct body placement, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body (epaulement), and the use of arms (port de bras). Class begins with work at the barre to build strength and coordination, followed by center exercises, culminating in a grand allegro combinations or variations. Clear explanations of exercises and theory help students use the ballet vocabulary in a simple, practical way that leads to increased technical understanding, healthy physical development, and lifelong enjoyment.
Level 6/7 Pointe: Students with strong ballet technique, sufficient core and ankle strength, and a teacher's recommendation go on to study 'en pointe'. We do not encourage pointe work until the student has accomplished an advanced technical level. Proper development and physical maturity of the student will determine the ability for pointe shoes.
Level 6/7 Tap: Tapping instills the use of rhythm and counting and encourages dance style and how to differentiate sounds. Students gain experience in a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm Tap. Younger students will learn to count musical phrases as well as gain an understanding of the importance of keeping together as a class. As the dancer progresses, challenging combinations for tap dancers further improve coordination, foot and ankle flexibility, and speed. Tap also enhances the dancer's performance, poise, and personality.
Level 6/7 Jazz: Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of Tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm Tap. Exercises will focus on building flexibility of the knees and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns.
Level 6/7 Contemporary: Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and ballet. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.
Level 6/7 Hip Hop: Hip Hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip Hop dance requires students to have strength & stamina. Therefore, class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as rigorous warm up to help students prepare for more intense movement.
Pom is a type of dance that incorporates typical cheerleading movements with jazz technique. Dancers will work on balance, precision, team synchronization, strength, and flexibility. Because pom combines so many styles of cheer and dance, students will become skilled in body placement, isolations, contractions, leaps, turns and dance combinations.
